PACKAGING – HOW TO KEEP YOUR IMPORTANT THINGS SAFE
There are many reasons why you might need to transfer possessions to self storage. Perhaps you’re selling a property in Wigan or surrounding areas and need to clear furniture out to make your property viewing ready. Perhaps you need secure self storage for your business disaster recovery plans, within easy motorway access from your business premises.
To package things away safely and efficiently, it is essential to know how to pack – using the right packaging for storage. Here are some of our top tips to help you to keep your important things safe.
AVOID BREAKAGES
Follow our guide for packing, particularly fragile items for storage. Above all, give yourself time to pack. All your items require a little TLC. That means you’re going to need to use the right containers and sufficient protective packaging to ensure they arrive at your new storage unit in perfect condition.
GET BOXES FOR YOUR STORAGE PACKING
As a minimum, you’re going to need boxes, bubble wrap, other wrapping and tape. If you don’t have a business or budget for new boxes, supermarkets are a good place to find durable corrugated boxes. They’re usually free boxes, but find strong ones for your general item storage.
WRAP TO AVOID SCUFFS IN TRANSIT
Wrapping paper helps to prevent items getting marked in transit. Cover each piece with a few layers of thin tissue paper if you can. Alternatively use whatever you have to hand – paper towels, fabric towels, pillowcases or even duvets as protective barriers for transporting items.
USE BUBBLE WRAP FOR FRAGILE ITEMS
Wrap fragile items in bubble wrap. Use packing tape to secure bubble wrap to the corners of all objects such as tables or drawers. Avoid damage from knocks and bumps while packing, loading, transporting and unloading.
SECURE WITH TAPE
Stop your possessions becoming dislodged, damaged or broken during transit. Use vinyl packing tape to secure all wrappings. Seal boxes with tape too.
LOAD LARGE ITEMS FIRST
When you’re ready to transport all your possessions to your self storage unit, it’s a good idea to pack the more significant pieces on first. Find space for your smaller items afterwards. Just make sure that all large items and boxes are secure. Again, our primary advice is – give yourself time to load and unload. Try to arrange bulky things first – then smaller pieces – with fragile items last.
